Huh?
As it turns out, a Han Solo in Carbonite was brought on set since Nathan Fillion is such a huge Star Wars fan. The props team joked around and added it to sets whenever they could, it apparently became a running joke. It didn't get grabbed out of every scene before shooting though.
Heart of Gold - look just above Mal's left shoulder

Jaynestown - look just to the right of the bartender's head

Objects in Space - look to the left of Book on the counter

The Message - look above Kaylee's hammock on the top right

Serenity - look on Badger's shelf (it looks a bit dusty) - spotted by reader smitsc05

There's a rumor that there's one hidden in every episode, but these are the only ones I could dig up. It makes me extraordinarily happy to know about this hidden gem in the Firefly 'verse.
That's awesome! I've heard I should watch Firefly because it's incredible, but I haven't mustered the energy to watch it.
ReplyDeleteLOL, I love it! :) Two of my favorite things put together :)
ReplyDeleteThat is so great! I definitely never caught that. Now I'll have to rewatch all the episodes to see if I can pick out Han.
ReplyDeletethat is cool and it will probably force me to watch every episode again. Thanks for pointing this out.
ReplyDeleteGreat reason to re-watch the series...
ReplyDeleteSo freaking sweet. I will now watch the entire series over :D
ReplyDeleteI have GOT to show this to my Dad! I do apologize if he then comments on your blog in all caps with ill grammar and no punctuation...
Ha, that's excellent!
ReplyDeleteMy husband and I have just been talking about buying the DVD set of Firefly - now we have an extra reason! Thanks for posting this. :)
ReplyDeleteThis totally made my day to read!
ReplyDeleteFirefly is on sale at Amazon right now. You can own the series for $14.99 and find Solo where nobody has spotted him before. I spend so much time admiring the costumes. Guess I should have been studying sets a bit.
ReplyDeleteThis is pretty much the best thing ever! See, this is why I read your blog, because of all these awesome things I would never know about otherwise!
ReplyDeleteTo those of you who haven't, WATCH FIREFLY AND SERENITY. I never got into scifi until a few years ago. Firefly is the reason. And I too, now have to open up my box set and do a scavenger hunt.
ReplyDeleteOh wow! Now I have to watch them all again (as if I wasn't going to anyway). It is like the pineapple in every Pshyc episode but way cooler. Thanks for pointing this out.
ReplyDeleteyay that gives me another reason to watch them all again (not that I really NEED a reason). Thanks for this! No power in the verse can stop us...
ReplyDeleteNow I need to go re-watch the series....
ReplyDeleteAnd i thought firefly couldn't get any better, now it has Han Solo in it, seems as if the 'verse truely is a great place to be
ReplyDeleteLove it!
ReplyDeleteThat is just completely f***ing awesome. Great job :-)
ReplyDeleteI see your next tattoo is going to be "you can't take the sky from me". Warmed my soul to know I'm not the only geek with firefly tats. I have "I'm a leaf on the wind, watch how I soar" on my left shoulder and "No power in the verse can stop me" on my right shoulder.
ReplyDeletegives me an excuse to watch firefly again. Cool. ! I wonder if they will do that in Castle episodes?
ReplyDeleteThat is bizarre that ppl would watch this all over again to see what is presented in these photos. God damn you all, get a life!

Very cool, also its the first time I've seen it mentioned anywhere which surprises me even more.
ReplyDeleteI love this show so much... *cry*
ReplyDeleteI really wish I'd seen this a few days ago, since I just got done watching Firefly again. :\
ReplyDeleteThey actually aren't in every episode - Nathan Fillion was trying to sneak them in, but he was usually caught. I think that there are nine instances total.
ReplyDeleteLove this! I never noticed nor have heard of it before, but I'll be on the lookout from now on. Super cool.
ReplyDeleteShiny :-)
ReplyDeleteI miss this show big time!!
ReplyDeleteyour blog is great! I like it a lot!!!

Great find.
ReplyDeleteI fell in love with 'Firefly' when I first watched it this year. This is a great bit of trivia. I had to steal it and post on the 'Cave of Cool'. I gave you full credit. Thanks for sharing this with all of us.
ReplyDeleteY'all just had to go and remind me of how awesome Firefly is and how dearly I miss it. Thanks for reopening old wounds.
ReplyDeleteYou rock girl!
ReplyDeleteOne more reason to watch it again.
ReplyDeleteMind = blown
ReplyDeleteJust awesome. I have to watch every episode again.
ReplyDeleteNice! My favorite fictional ships are (in order): The Belafonte (Life Aquatic), The Millenium Falcon, Serenity. I just got the Blu-ray version of Firefly, so I'll have to watch them all again!
ReplyDeleteI KNEW it! My friends said I was seeing things and that I was crazy.
ReplyDeletemmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmm Mal Reynolds.......... er - what? Oh yes. Excellent spotting skills! Ha ha ha ha
ReplyDeleteI've watched Firefly more times than I care to admit....I've always known about the Han Solo gag....but never knew what I was looking for...thanks for making the shots available.
ReplyDeleteYet one more thing to love about Firefly.
ReplyDeleteNice to think that when humanity gets out into the galaxy, they will take ancient pop culture crap with them. I know I would.
ReplyDeleteWooo hooo! I new reason to watch them all again. I already found Han in "Serenity"... behind Badger's Desk on the shelf. Thanks for this Amy. It's like finding water on Mars! (Ok, I need to get a life.)
ReplyDeletethats HILARIOUS!!!!
ReplyDeleteI wouldn't be surprised if Solo now resides somewhere in Richard Castle's office. I'll have to keep an eye out.
ReplyDeleteI love you for posting this! awesome!
ReplyDeleteTake my love, take my land
ReplyDeleteTake me where I cannot stand
I don't care, I'm still free
You can't take the sky from me
I don't get the excitement?
ReplyDeleteTake me out to the black
ReplyDeleteTell 'em I ain't comin' back
Burn the land and boil the sea
You can't take the sky from me.
Noobs - don't watch Serenity 'til you've watched all of Firefly.
(Now I have to rewatch all the Castle DVD's... oh, too bad, huh?)
I like the idea that Han is some sort of Christ figure, and instead of crucifixes we have Han in carbonite as the religous icon. And these are just lil tokens lying around from some hookey religion/folk tale.
ReplyDeleteQuestions for a serious discussion while smoking weed:
ReplyDeleteDoes this mean the humanoids in the Firefly universe are giants?
Or, are the humanoids in the Star Wars universe are tiny?
Discuss amongst your stoned selves.
Whoa! Good question! But I agree with the previous poster. I like the idea of "Han in Carbonite" as a religious icon.
ReplyDeleteHmmmmmm..."For Han so loved Leia that he gave of himself to give her brother, Luke, the chance he needed to escape the clutches of the evil one, Darth Vader."

ReplyDeletei think i just found the one in Our Mrs Reynolds but i could be mistaken.
ReplyDeleteIt's at the end of the scene where Mal and Saffron are first walking out of the engine room. to the bottom right of the keyboard on the walk just under what looks like a rolled up newspaper.
just found the one in Out of Gas. Mal is walking into the engine room to replace the catalyzer, the voice says 'Life support failure, check oxygen levels at once'. it's sitting on top the control panel, to the right of the keyboard on the wall just under the light.
ReplyDeletei'll provide pics when i 1. stop being lazy and cap them and 2. figure how to post.
Haha it's not surprising, Whedon is the ultimate freak. He should do another great tv serie, most of current shows sucks :(
ReplyDeleteI'm glad so many folks enjoyed seeing this!
ReplyDeleteThis is full of awesome.

ReplyDeleteBig Deal...When Berman ran the ST franchise prod crew would leave Hitch-Hiker's Guide T.T.G. references all over the sets because they were smartasses.
Hubby and I were just talking about getting Firefly to watch it again ~ and now we have even more of a reason ~ lol.
ReplyDeleteBy the way, have you seen Broken Bells video for "The Ghost Inside"? It's my favourite new song and I love the video which features Christina Hendricks. For me, it was reminiscent of her character Saffron in Firefly...
When I just started watching Firefly I thought: "Oh wow, had they ever made a Han-Solo-before-New-Hope TV show, this would be it!"
ReplyDeleteThis is great! I'm reposting it on my Tumblr (giving you full credit of course).
GREAT, NOW I HAVE TO GO RE-WATCH THEM ALL.
ReplyDeleteThanks :3

You're making me want to get the BluRay version... and a BluRay player... HiDef Teevee just so I can comb through it.
ReplyDeleteThis is perfect, especially since the Wayland-Utani symbol is on the HUD from the anti-aircraft gun in the pilot episode. So Alienverse has a tie in as well.
ReplyDeleteSorry I still can't look past Kaylee.... Carbon-what?
ReplyDeleteI can't look away from Kaylee... my eyes keep getting drawn back to her...
ReplyDeleteThank you giving me the (very little) excuse I needed to watch the full series and movie again...
ReplyDeleteThis is great! I love it. But what about The cameo of the Firefly Serenity in Battle Star Galactica? Did any one see that? I think I did on a shot of the traffic stream above and to the upper left of Starbucks Home the first time the show goes there. it lasted about 0.7 seconds
ReplyDeleteOh man, I vaguely remember reading that! It's so great to see some pictures of it. :D
ReplyDeleteOkay, This post alone is enough for me to start following your blog.
ReplyDeleteHuzzah! I'll take it. :D
