"Littlefinger is so perfectly cast."
"The Mountain isn't as big as I thought he would be."
"Did you see Renly?! And Ser Barristan the Bold?"
"Where has Ghost been?"
"Was that part with Theon like that in the books? I can't remember."
Every question is followed by the rest of the group saying, who is that? There are a lot of characters and because the stage is being set for many epic moments, the introductions are skipped or rushed. It's okay that you don't know each person and his or her relation to everyone else. Really.
However, a fabulous lady I know has made an infographic that shows the characters and how they fit in. Here's a peek at House Stark:
What I particularly love about this infographic is that she created it only based on the TV show. She hasn't read the books. She's updating this character and relationship map as the episodes air, so you don't have to worry about being spoiled. Genius, right? She's used information from HBO to fill in some blanks so you might see some character names that haven't come into the show yet - but I'd hardly call that spoilers. I would call this illustrated guide Game of Thrones for Dummies, but if I hadn't read the books, I know I would have a hard time keeping track of who is who.
Check out the Game of Thrones infographic in all it's detailed glory. If you find it useful, please pass the link along.

Thanks for the shout out! I'm glad someone else besides me finds this useful.
ReplyDeleteYou're right having not read the books its very confusing how everyone is connected. During the first episode I actually somehow missed that Cersei and Jaime were brother and sister... I think my jaw dropped to the floor when I was looking up the guide on HBO AFTER the whole up in the tower scene, lol
I downloaded the first book and I'm going to start reading it today. Yesterday I was just looking stuff up on "A Wiki of Ice and Fire" and accidentally read a huge spoiler so now I must read what happened. =/
I forwarded this on to friends, it is so awesome. I love that the wolves are included too. I completely love this show, so much so that I just ordered the book and hubby and I are fighting over who gets to read it first! Gotta love geek families ;)
ReplyDeletethanks for this link. My wife hasn't read the books and is kind of lost,so this should help.
ReplyDeleteI think I'll have to pick up the books, cause I'm not feeling it for the show yet. Perhaps it's that I've just finished watching "Pillars of the Earth" and my head is overloaded with empire building plots and such.

Thank you! I've read the books, but haven't started on the series yet! Looking so forward to it - even though I know I shouldn't, being female, according to sweet and stupid Gina B...
ReplyDeleteI leke your blog!!
That was meant to say: I like your blog!
ReplyDeleteI made the "wise" decision to start reading the book a week before the first episode premiered. I almost wish I'd waited to read it until after the first season, because it's really hard to watch knowing what comes next. And yet, knowing who is who has made things a heck of a lot easier to follow!
ReplyDeleteI'm really enjoying the series right now. It's so good that I wonder if there's any point in reading the books now.
ReplyDeleteAnd diagrams are wonderful, wonderful things.

ReplyDeleteI've just started reading the book, and I'm getting lost… would the character map help me without spoiling it too much?

I’m impressed, I must say. Really rarely should i encounter a weblog that’s both educative and entertaining, and without a doubt, you have hit the nail for the head. Your thought is outstanding; the thing is a thing that inadequate persons are speaking intelligently about. I’m delighted that we came across this during my find some thing concerning this.
